Nice writing and arguments….even though I am probably seen by most as a relatively liberal Democrat, your site’s essays are well-reasoned and researched. I, of course, believe there are times when government needs to be involved in the life of its citizenry more than at other times, and during times of near economic crises happens to be one of those occasions. The Bush administraton was a disaster, especially in the area of economic policy. The Clinton administration finished with 3 straight years of budget surpluses, followed by successively larger deficits experienced in the Bush administration and culminating in the deepest recession the US has experienced since the Great Depression. Although there were certainly some global events and conditions that helped create the global recession, waging two wars, neither one being approved by Congress, that were off-budget and, together costing the US over 1 trillion dollars, over 4000 U.S. deaths, and permanent disabilitie to over 50K U.S, soldiers, never mind the over 100000 Iraqi citizens killed and multiples of that injured or disabled, was devastating to the economy in terms of created debt.
The emergency efforts of the Obama administration, in my opinion, absolutely saved this nation from plunging into a full-blown depression, which could have been every bit as devastating as the one that began in 1929. This is a situation that, because of the ills of the Bush administration, government needed to step in to save a nation’s, and world’s economy.
