Last Friday (02/17/12) in Vancouver, an independent panel of experts, not tied to the gas and oil industry, made a presentation before the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, informing the audience that fracking techniques can be conducted in a safe and environmentally-friendly manner.

The fracking extraction process, also commonly known as hydrofracking, or hydraulic fracturing, consists of injecting water, sand, and/or chemicals deep into the ground in order to break up rock formations, which then results in the release of natural gas deposits.

The presentation before the American Association for the Advancement of Science was based upon a study released last Wednesday (02/15/12) by the Energy Institute of the University of Texas (Austin), entitled “Separating Fact from Fiction in Shale Gas Development.”

In conducting its study, the UT Energy Institute assembled “an interdisciplinary team of university experts” to study safety and environmental issues associated with fracking extraction within the Barnett Shale (Texas); the Marcellus Shale (Pennsylvania, New York, and portions of Appalachia); and the Haynesville Shale (Louisiana and northeast Texas). …

On Monday, President Obama sent his federal budget proposal for fiscal year 2013 to Congress.

The day before, the President told an enthusiastic, partisan crowd that the “main Idea” behind his proposed budget is the following:

At a time when our economy is growing and creating jobs at a faster clip, we’ve got to do everything in our power to keep this recovery on track.

(See Text of the President’s Remarks Regarding his FY 2013 Budget Proposals, http://disorderedliberty.com/?p=896.)

Unfortunately, President Obama’s proposed budget fails to meet his own stated goal.

Rather than doing “everything in [his] power to keep this recovery [?] on track,” the President’s proposed budget offers little prospects towards restoring either the current or long-term economic health of the Nation. …

First of all, I want to thank Mike for the wonderful introduction. Please give Mike a big round of applause.

It is great to be back here at NOVA. I’ve been here so many times I’m about three credits short of graduation. But there are a couple of reasons that I keep on coming back. First of all, I think that Dr. Templin and the whole administration here is doing a great job, so I want to give them a big round of applause. …

The Obama Administration finally releases its “independent audit” of the DOE Energy Loan Guarantee Program.

Today, after months of persistent requests from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, as well as its Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, the White House finally released the “independent audit” it had commissioned regarding the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) clean energy loan programs.

The report was commissioned by the Administration last October, several weeks after the financial collapse of California solar panel manufacturer Solyndra. Bill Daley, who was President Obama’s Chief of Staff at the time, appointed former Treasury Department official Herb Allison to write the report. …

It is a very inspiring time [for Egyptians]—that you have overthrown a dictator, and that you are striving to achieve a genuine democracy.

Disordered Liberty has recently commented on the Obama Administration’s lack of transparency regarding the investigation of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee into the ill-advised Operation Fast and Furious, the federal program under which the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) recklessly allowed approximately 2000 U.S. weapons to flow across the border into the hands of Mexican drug cartel members.

In fact, the situation has become so untenable that Darrell Issa (R-CA), the Chairman of the Committee, recently wrote a letter to U.S. Attorney Eric Holder, informing Holder that the Committee may hold him in contempt of Congress if he continues to fail to comply with congressional subpoenas for documents, unless he asserts a valid a constitutional privilege excusing his non-compliance.…

Today, the Supreme Court announced its April calendar, revealing that it will hear oral argument on April 25th, regarding Arizona v. United States, No. 11-182, the appeal of last April’s decision by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld a lower federal district court ruling that enjoined significant portions of SB 1070, the Arizona law targeting illegal immigration, on the grounds that state immigration legislation is preempted by federal law.

The most important provisions of SB 1070 enjoined by the federal courts are:

1. A requirement that state police officers determine the immigration status of a person who has already been legally stopped or arrested, if officers have reason to believe that the person might be an illegal immigrant;
